Ubuntu 10.04: The first alpha
Just over a month after the release of the final version of Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala, the first alpha of Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx has already been published. The opportunity to take stock of what awaits the next major version of the popular Linux distribution, the third to receive a long-term support (LTS), three years for desktops.
Ubuntu 10.04 is for the time on the brand new Linux 2.6.32 kernel and the latest Gnome desktop environment 2.29.3, which brings a lot of improvements. But the main novelty is the removal of the hardware abstraction layer (HAL), which allows it to achieve its main objective: a start-up time of about 10 seconds.
Under the new schedule for development, Lucid Lynx will go through three alphas, two betas (March 18 and April 8) and a release candidate (April 22) before the release of the final version, currently held in April 29 2010.
