True to its schedule, Canonical, the commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, has issued the final version of the latest version of Ubuntu, the 10.04, codenamed Lucid Lynx. 18 million users of Ubuntu end of 2010: a possible target?

Just days after the release of the Release Candidate for Ubuntu 10.04, the Linux distribution is available for download.

For users of previous versions of the OS, the most visible change will undoubtedly be the new graphic - and the work on ergonomics. Including developments arising from the integration of Gnome 2.30 and KDE 4.4.

The advantages of Ubuntu 9.10 and new graphics

Despite these developments, no real changes to the user and the emphasis is more than ever on simplicity of handling the system. Ubuntu Lucid Lynx, Canonical does not only preach to the converted, but hopes to win new users.

Canonical claimed 8 million users in late 2008. A year later, they are 12 million worldwide. Maintaining the same growth curve, Ubuntu could have 18 million followers by the end of this year.

The Linux distribution has undoubtedly ingredients to this ambition. Even if his latest Ubuntu Music Store service has yet to be perfected, it already allows users to have a tool for listening to streaming music and buy DRM-free tracks.

Ubuntu wants to seduce with social networks

For data availability, Canonical has expanded the integration between Ubuntu One (its online storage service) and the operating system. Now any folder on the personal file can be synchronized with its account of Ubuntu One.

As for finding Linux compatible software and installation is simple because since Ubuntu 9.10, they are collected and organized by categories in the Software Center.

Finally, users are more likely to engage social networks. This usage is not forgotten in Lucid Lynx. Gwibber, a client to interact with different services (Twitter, Facebook, Flickr ...) and MeMenu (supported by Gwibber and Empathy IM) are integrated by default.
